Milk Herdshare
What is a Herdshare?
A herdshare is a contractual agreement between a farmer and a consumer where the consumer becomes a co-owner of a herd of livestock. The consumer, or herdshare member, pays a fee to the farmer in exchange for a portion of the milk or other products produced by the herd. I retain all of the control, decision making, and care of the herd. Don’t worry, you don’t have to come out to the farm all year long to help us milk! You pay a boarding fee for us to take care of your part of the herd. What the herd produces is divided up into shares. The more dairy you want, the more shares you buy.
What does a share cost?
1 milk share = 1 gallon = $12
1/2 milk share = 1/2 gallon = $6
You can also pay extra to have your share of milk made into ice cream, butter, cheese, yogurt, etc.
What methods of payment do you accept?
Cash, Venmo, or Zelle
What is the pickup schedule?
Farm pickup is at VHV Ranch in Dewey only. Currently we will have by appointment only, but we are working to have open pick up soon!
If you decide to quit, increase, or decrease the number of shares you have - give me 10 day’s notice before your next pickup. If it’s available we will try to make that happen!
What if I am out of town?
Because this part of the herd is reserved for only you, it cannot be sold to anyone else. If you are going to be out of town or unable to pick up, you will need to find someone else to pick up your shares or pay your boarding fee and skip that pick up.
What do I have to do to join?
1. Decide how many milk shares you will go through between your pickups (weekly or biweekly). This is not designed to fluctuate from pickup to pickup, but if you find you need to adjust at first to get the right amount, you can - with one week’s notice.
2. Text me and confirm that there is an opening that will work in both of our schedules.
3. Pay a $10 per share fee to purchase your share(s). You will be refunded for the same amount when you decide to leave the herdshare. Sign the membership agreement.
4. Jars. You can bring me 1/2 gallon glass mason jars with ball or approved white plastic lid or you can purchase them from me. I charge $5 for a jar and plastic lid. You will need double what is “needed” at your first pick up. Example if you pick up a gallon (2 jars) at a time, you will need to have 2 gallons worth of jars (4 jars). This way we have jars to alternate with. If you get two gallons a week, you will need 4 gallons worth of jars.. These jars will all be etched and labeled with VHV Ranch. This way I know if someone’s glass is damaged or not properly cleaned. All jars should be for milk ONLY! Please rinse and clean jars and lids before you bring them back. They will all be rewashed and sanitized but I don’t want to scrub residue in every jar.
Can you give me an example?
Let’s say you want to join the Herdshare and pick up one gallon of milk every week on the Monday. You will text me to set up an appointment to meet you the first time and to answer your questions. We will set up a reoccurring pick up day. At the first pickup, you will pay:
$10 share purchase, $20 for 4 glass jars (unless you bring your own), $12 for milk. $42 total.
At the next pickup. You will bring back both of your glass bottles (clean) and pick up new full ones. You will pay $12 for your milk share.
Can I try the milk first?
Yes, you can make a one time purchase of one half gallon without joining. (This would obviously not be recommended for human consumption.) You must come to the farm - bring your own container and $6 in cash.
If I join, am I guaranteed that you will always have my shares?
Cows don’t produce the same amount of milk all year long, and they each need a 6-8 week “vacation” from milking once a year right before they have a calf. If our production drops below projected levels and you are the newest member, I will contact you and put your shares on hold until we have enough shares again to bring you back, hopefully no longer than 6-8 weeks. This is unlikely, but just know the possibility is there.
